Description
Number 53 and the attached wall to the southeast, which contains the former gateway to the churchyard, is a pair of cottages from the late 18th century that now functions as a single house. The building features watershot masonry and a stone slate roof, and it is two storeys high, facing the road. It has quoins and a centrally placed flat-faced mullioned window with five lights, including a wider central light. On either side of this window are doorways with monolithic jambs at the corners and other tie-stone jambs. The first floor has a three-light window and a two-light window. The left-hand return wall has a two-light window at the apex and a gable stack. The rear of the building faces the churchyard and includes a five-light flat-faced mullioned window with wide lights that was altered in the mid-20th century, along with a three-light and a two-light window on the first floor. Attached to the east is a wall made of dressed stone with ovolo moulded coping, which contains the remains of a blocked gateway. This gateway has a surviving lintel and one composite jamb with a moulded surround. It formerly provided access to the churchyard opposite the north door of the Church of St. Thomas à Becket. This structure is likely contemporary with the gateway attached to Heptonstall Grammar School, which is dated 1765.
