Description

Ibbot Royd Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with a porch added around 1730. It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof, and is two storeys high. The original plan was of three rooms, with direct access into the service room, lacking a balancing door in the rear wall. The front facade features a two-light chamfered mullioned window; a gabled porch with kneelers and coping, similar in style to that at White Hole, Thurrish Lane, which is dated 1737; a seven-light double chamfered mullioned window to the main block, incorporating a king mullion, with a three-light chamfered window above. A three-light chamfered window is present in the parlour, also with a matching window above, though this has been blocked in the 20th century and replaced with a dormer window of two large lights. A 19th-century doorway has been inserted, featuring tie-stone jambs. All windows now lack most of their mullions and contain modern glazing. The left hand return wall has a coped gable with kneelers. The rear elevation shows a two-light fire window and a small arched light above to the first floor, plus a two-light window to the rear of the parlour. A substantial single stack rises from the ridge. Inside, the main section (housebody) has scarf-jointed spine beams, showing previous evidence of a bressumer, and a stone chamfered doorway to the parlour. The parlour also features a spine beam with a grooved soffit, suggesting a former screen separating the room, perhaps from a ladder staircase lit by the two-light window on the rear wall. The farmhouse is documented in C.F. Stell’s publication, page 108.
