Description

Nos 2 to 5 Backhold Lane is a group of traditional stone houses dating from the 17th century. They are three storeys high with a stone roof and feature three gables with finials on the main south front. The windows are irregular, with some being very wide, and include transoms on the ground storey along with various dripmoulds, some of which have labels. The gables have stepped, three-light windows. There is an arched doorway with a carved and inscribed tablet above it. To the west, there is an addition likely from the 18th century, which has plain mullioned windows, and a shop is located on the west return. The east return is plain, and the irregular rear has some interest despite alterations. The lintel above the door of No 4 is inscribed with the initials H over T E and is dated 1668.

Inside, one ground floor room features a stone chimney piece with slight carving and the date 1668, and it is said that there are three other similar chimney pieces.
