Description

39 to 41 St Martin's is a 17th-century building that stands two storeys tall with an attic, constructed from cement-rendered stone. It features four canted bays, each three storeys high, topped with hipped roofs. Three of the bays have four-light mullioned and transomed windows on each storey, while the fourth bay, which is larger, has an eight-light window. The entrance to No 40 is located between the second and third bays from the south end, accessed by two steps, and features a six-panel door set in a moulded stone surround with a semi-circular hood supported by moulded brackets. No 41, situated at the north end of the block, has a six-panel door with a glazed fanlight within a 19th-century Tudor porch, which is said to have come from the Corn Exchange of 1889 on Broad Street. Below the porch is a small two-light mullioned window. No 39 has its door positioned to the side, featuring a 19th-century drip mould and two paired windows beneath a drip mould with "Gothic" glazing. The rear of No 39 includes a 19th-century extension. The group also includes Nos 39 to 43, a garden wall to No 43, No 44, a wall to No 44, and Nos 45 to 70, along with a garden wall to Nos 68 and 69, which collectively form a significant group with the Burghley Almshouses.
