Description
St Martin's Guest House, located at No 42, was built in 1671, with its front elevation reflecting late 18th-century design. The building is two storeys high with attics and constructed from ashlar stone. It features three cambered dormers, a moulded stone cornice, and a blocking course, along with a stone band between the storeys. There are two stone chimney stacks and a small stone plinth.
The front has three windows, which are double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor windows consist of three lights and are set in plain reveals. The central door is designed in the Roman Doric style, featuring fluted half-columns and a moulded pediment. This door has four panels and is topped by a rectangular fanlight, with two steps leading up to it.
To the left, there are two-storey extensions. On the first floor of this extension, there is one window in a plain reveal. The ground floor has a former door, now a window, which is topped by a semi-circular fanlight with a keystone and flanked by two additional windows divided by a band, although these have modern glazing. The building also includes a double pile rear wing and a 19th-century conservatory.
St Martin's Guest House is part of a group with Nos 39 to 43, the garden wall to No 43, No 44, the wall to No 44, and Nos 45 to 70, along with the garden wall to Nos 68 and 69, which includes the Burghley Almshouses.
