Description

This is a lock house, dating from approximately 1820. It was constructed for the Calder and Hebble Navigation Company, built between 1770 and 1834 as part of a series of workers' cottages. The house is built of regularly coursed stone with a hipped roof covered in stone slates. It has a T-shaped plan and a central brick chimney stack. The structure is built into a natural slope. The upper floor faces the lock, with a central 20th-century glazed door protected by a pointed lead hood. Flanking the door are single, 20th-century, 3-light casement windows set within arched recesses. A shallow stone parapet runs along the main facade, featuring pilasters at each end and a slightly raised central panel. A reference to the cottage's history can be found in Workers' Housing in West Yorkshire 1750 - 1920, published by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments in 1986.
