Description
Salterhebble Middle Lock, built around 1779, is a lock on the Calder and Hebble Navigation. It features a chamber and wing walls made of large ashlar blocks. At each end, there are double timber gates and timber balance beams. One of the top gates is equipped with handspike-operated paddle gear, while the other has manually operated hydraulic paddle gear, along with an associated pair of handspike-operated ground paddles. The tail gates are fitted with manually operated rack and pinion paddle gear. Beneath the balance beams, there are three stone set quadrants. This lock is part of a flight of three locks that replaced an earlier staircase built in 1767 and is a rare surviving example of the unique handspike-operated locks of the Calder and Hebble Navigation. It has group value with the adjacent lock, cottage, and bridge.
