Description
Salterhebble Top Lock, built around 1779, is a lock on the Calder and Hebble Navigation. It features a chamber and wing walls made of large ashlar blocks, with stone copings on the side nearest the cottage and concrete on the opposite side. The lock has double timber gates with timber balance beams at each end. The top gates are equipped with handspike-operated paddle gear, along with a pair of handspike-operated ground paddles. The tail gates have manually operated rack and pinion paddle gear. This lock is part of a flight of locks that replaced an earlier staircase built in 1767 and is a rare surviving example of handspike-operated locks on the Calder and Hebble. It has group value with the adjacent lock, cottage, and road bridge.
