Description

Birkdale Farmhouse is a mid-17th century house that has been combined with two cottages. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The main house is two storeys high with a four-bay front, which includes quoins and a continuous string course. There is a doorway with composite jambs and a four-centred arched lintel located in the right-hand fourth bay, and another doorway with monolithic jambs from the 19th century in the second bay. The first and third bays contain windows; the first bay's window has been reduced in size during the 19th century, while the third bay features a double chamfered mullioned and transomed window with eight lights and hollow chamfers. On the first floor, there are double chamfered mullioned windows of two, four, and five lights, with the five-light window having two mullions removed. A large central stack rises from the ridge. Attached to the left end of the main house is a two-storey cottage that is now used as a garage, which has rendered walls. The right end has a single-storey cottage. The left-hand return wall features a four-light double chamfered mullioned window. At the rear, which is built back to earth, there are single light, two-light, and four-light double chamfered mullioned windows, with the latter displaying masons marks on the jamb. Inside the main house, there is a fireplace with a four-centred arch.
