Description

This long range, originally a stable block to the east of Smith House, now forms two dwellings and a garage. It dates from the mid-18th century, with alterations in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof.

The two-storey cottage, located on the left, retains original late 18th-century, thin, flat-faced mullioned windows of four lights with a three-light window above each bay. A large modern French window has been inserted, with a matching three-light mullioned window above. A gable stack is present.

The single-storey stable range has a doorway with monolithic jambs, three cross-windows, and two gabled attic dormers in the roof. A cart entry has a segmental arch which rises into a large gabled dormer containing a stepped light of 2/4 recessed, flat-faced mullions with square reveals. The apex of the dormer has a square block surmounted by a ball finial set with a decorative wrought iron and brass weather vane. A smaller, similar feature is located to the right of the cart entry in the wall. Quoins define the angles.

The return wall fronts the lane and includes a two-storey gabled house (Smith House Lodge) with early 20th-century detailing. This section retains flat-faced mullioned windows, mainly of three lights to each floor and features false timber framing, oversailing eaves with plain bargeboards.

The building is listed for group value with Smith House.
