Description

This building is a dwelling that was formerly a coach house, constructed around 1775 and converted into a home around 1995. It was likely built shortly after the nearby Cliffe House was rebuilt, which it served. The structure is made of brick with some ashlar dressings and features slate roofs.

The front elevation faces west and is two stories high, topped with a hipped slate roof. A central doorway, added in the late 20th century, has been inserted into what was originally a blind-arched cart door. There are three round-arched windows on either side of the doorway, with the windows numbered 2 and 4 likely being late 20th-century conversions of earlier openings. On the first floor, there is a small semi-circular light in the center, flanked by three round-headed windows, with the middle window on each side positioned lower than the others. All windows have been newly framed in wood.

Attached to the south end of the range is a single-storey brick building from the late 20th century, which is not considered of interest. There is also a post-1854 addition at the rear of the coach house that has not been inspected but is unlikely to be significant.

The interior was converted into a domestic dwelling in 1996. The adjacent Cliffe Hill mansion is believed to have been built in 1775, and the stables and coach house complex date from the same period. These structures were designed to impress, featuring a Neo-classical stable yard with an unusual screen wall. This coach house is listed for its group value with the stables and the attached enclosure wall.
