Description
The tower to the former Church of St. Matthew was built in 1775 by William Mallinson from Halifax. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings that are square in section, tapering to the crown. At the top, there is an octagonal arcaded cupola with a ball finial. The ground floor features a round-headed window, and above it is a circular opening. The belfry contains stone taken from an earlier church on this site, which is inscribed with the words: 'Deo et Sancto Mattaeo Apostolo Evangelistae Martyri Sacra A. O. DC XXIX'. This tower was formerly listed as the Old Church of St. Matthew.
