Description

Bottom Hall Farmhouse and attached Bottom Hall Cottage is a house divided into two occupations, likely built in the late 17th century. To the left is a pair of late 18th century cottages made of hammer-dressed stone, while the earlier building is rendered with some visible ashlar quoins at the rear, topped by a stone slate roof. The two-storey cottages feature paired doorways with monolithic jambs and have a 3-light flat faced mullioned window on either side. The first floor includes two 2-light windows and one 3-light window, with widely spaced gutter brackets and a stack at each gable. The earlier building has a lower ridge level and entirely modern doorways and windows, with a low sweeping roof that has one stack at the ridge. The rear of the building retains slightly recessed flat faced mullioned windows, with four lights on each floor and two lights on the first floor of the cottage, which has a single-storey lean-to extension. This property was used as the Township Workhouse until the Poor-Law Act of 1834.
