Description
Old Lindley Farmhouse and Old Lindley Farm Cottage is a house now divided into three separate residences. It originated in the 15th century as a timber-frame structure, which was later encased in stone in the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century and additions in the 19th century. The building features large dressed stone and thin coursed stone with a stone slate roof. It has a single-aisled hall and an ungabled cross-wing plan, where the cross-wing projects forward from the main range but shares the same roof line.
The house is two storeys high and showcases a prominent feature on the ground floor: a 5-light double chamfered mullioned window, which has had two of its mullions removed and is topped with a hood mould that includes stars in square label stops. Above this, there is a 3-light double chamfered mullioned window and an 18th-century 4-light mullioned window, accompanied by a gable stack. The main hall range is also two storeys. The front was rendered and rebuilt in the mid-18th century and extended in the early 19th century, featuring a coped gable with kneelers and three bays.
The first bay includes a 3-light mullioned window and a doorway with a single light above, along with a 2-light window. The second bay has a window where the original doorway was located, with a through passage leading to a 2-light mullioned window above; it also has a doorway, a 2-light window, and a 3-light and 2-light window above. The third bay has a lower roof line with a doorway and a 2-light window, along with a 4-light window above. The rear of the building has a single-storey aisle with a steeply pitched continuous roof. Inside, there is a surviving post to the arcade plate and a king post truss with 'A' struts.
