Description
The aviary, now disused, was constructed around 1870 as part of Shaw Park. It is built of dressed stone with ashlar dressings, slate and corrugated iron roofs. The structure comprises a three-story central tower and flanking single-story wings. The central tower has a dentilated band just above the first floor, a moulded and dentilated band above the second floor, and a deep bracketed eaves cornice. The pyramidal hipped roof has a curved rear gable. The tower's central doorway is pointed, flanked by lancet windows; above are three lancets, and above that, a pair of lancets flanked by single lancets. The upper stage of the tower has three lancets on each side face. The wings each originally had six tall lancet windows, the lower halves of which are now blocked, alternating with five pairs of small segment arched openings, which are also blocked. Originally, the wings had hipped roofs, now replaced with lean-to corrugated iron roofs, and the front had a single-story cage.
