Description
Holywell House is a mansion built around 1860, currently serving as a nursing home. It was constructed for the Shaw family, who were mill owners. The front is made of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. The building has a symmetrical nine-bay façade that projects forward in the second and eighth bays, as well as in the central five bays. It is two storeys high.
The central five bays are elaborately designed with deep-set round-headed windows on both floors. The ground floor features doors on either side, flanked by colonnettes. Above the central window on the first floor, which is now blocked, there is a balcony supported by consoles. A heavy cornice with consoles carries a parapet above, and there is a simpler attic storey over the central three bays. The second and eighth bays each have two-storey canted bay windows topped with a simpler cornice. The outermost bays contain flat-headed windows, with cornices on consoles above the ground floor windows.
The building is topped with four heavily moulded chimneys that are symmetrically placed. While some windows are casements, most of the first-floor windows are sash windows. The rear elevation features a central element with an elaborate Venetian window on the first floor, with jambs formed by coupled pilasters.
