ELLAND NORTHGATE, OFF STAINLAND ROAD Holywell Green Farm House and Barn

House with barn attached. Mid C17 and early C19. Thin coursed rubble stone, stone slate roof. 3-room, through-passage plan. 2 storeys. Main C17 entrance has single- storey porch with leanto roof, (against No. 2 Northgate). To left is fire-window and double chamfered mullioned window of 4 lights (with 2 mullions removed); C19 doorway with monolithic jambs and 4-light double chamfered mullioned window. Over are two C19 4-light mullioned windows with central mullion removed. Barn, of thin coursed stone with dressed details, has coped gable with kneelers, central semi-circular archheaded entrance with projecting keystone, flanked by doorways with monolithic jambs with archheaded ventilators over. Interior of 3 bays with queen-strut roof and one softwood fish-bone king-post truss. Adjacent house, No. 2 Northgate (q.v.), has reset doorway with dated lintel 1626 which may be date of house.
