Description

Nessfields is a late 17th-early 18th century house, expanded in the later 18th century, and subsequently altered. It is now used as a single residence and incorporates two cottages. The house is constructed of coursed millstone grit with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys. The main house section has three windows on the first floor. A plinth is visible, and quoins are present. A gabled porch with a segment-headed doorway, containing a 20th-century board door and a small window, is located to the right of the centre of the front elevation. To the left of the porch is a four-light double-chamfered mullion window where two mullions have been removed. To the far left is a three-light double-chamfered mullion window with iron shutter pins on the left jamb. The first floor features a three-light double-chamfered mullion window to the left, a four-light flat-faced mullion window in the centre, and a two-light flat-faced mullion window to the right. An added bay to the right projects forward and is defined by quoins. A central door is present, with a blocked doorway, now a window, above it to the left. The added bay and main house have a roof with two levels, the front being lower than the back. Two ridge stacks are visible. The cottage to the left has one first-floor window and a plinth to the right. Two steps lead to a 20th-century stable door within a quoined surround and deep lintel. A two-light chamfered mullion window, where the mullion has been removed, is located to the left, with a matching window above. A stack is present to the left. At the rear, the house has a two-light double-chamfered mullion window on the ground floor to the left, and a similar three-light window above. The added bay has a plinth, chamfered at first-floor level, and a four-light flat-faced mullion window to the first floor. The cottage’s rear has a round-arched light in a chamfered surround to the first floor. The right gable showcases a four-light double-chamfered mullion window on the ground floor.
