Description
Pear Tree Cottage is a pair of cottages that have been combined into one house. They date from the late 17th century, with most features from the late 18th century. The building is made of hammer-dressed stone with rubble on the sides and rear, topped with stone slate roofs.
On the left, there is a single-storey, single-cell section attached to a two-storey single cell, which was originally single-storey but was raised to two storeys in the late 18th century. This section has a two-light chamfered mullioned window and a doorway with monolithic jambs, which is now a window. The cottage on the right is slightly set back and features a doorway with monolithic jambs to the left of a window with plain stone surrounds. It also has a two-light flat-faced mullioned window on the first floor and a gable stack on the right.
Inside the two-storey cottage, there is a large fireplace with a basket-arched bressumer and a chamfered surround. To the left of the fireplace, there are remains of a stone spiral staircase set within the wall. The large spine beams include one with a half-lap joint and broad stop-chamfer, which may be re-used crucks.
