Description
The Catholic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, originally a Wesleyan Methodist Church, was built around 1870. It features hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a roof made of Welsh and Westmorland green slate. The church has a cruciform plan and a prominent west end with a wide gable, which includes a five-light arched window with geometrical tracery and a doorway topped with a triangular hood that has a quatrefoil. There are buttresses with offsets on either side, with the right side being taller and set back from two faces of an octagonal turret that has an open belfry and a spire above. The north and south transepts have tall plain lancet windows, and the gables are coped with kneelers and finials. The roof is adorned with four bands of fish-scale slates.
Inside, the church features an elaborate arch-braced roof that springs from clustered colonnettes located at the angles of the transepts. The braces cross in the center, forming a St. Andrew's cross figure, and cast-iron hoops are set in the open spandrels. A pointed arched recess creates a shallow sanctuary. The church is included for its group value.
