Description
Lower Benns Farmhouse is a 17th-century building that features a timber frame and coursed rubble construction, with large quoins and mainly rendered walls. It has a stone slate roof and stands two storeys high, although the second storey is only visible in the gable end due to its design as a two-aisled long house. The farmhouse consists of five bays, with three dedicated to the barn and two to the house, separated by a masonry wall that the hearth backs onto.
The principal elevation is located on the west gable end. On the ground floor, there are two three-light stone mullioned windows with unmoulded flat drip stones, both of which have had their mullions removed. The first floor features two two-light stone mullioned windows with hollow chamfers and one single-light window. The south elevation includes one three-light hollow chamfered stone mullioned window and a larger two-light hollow chamfered stone mullioned window, which has had its mullion removed; this window may have originally served as the hall window, given its size and the fact that the room it illuminates is heated. The barn has entrances with recessed porches on the cross axis. The building has group value with its surroundings.
