Description

The boiler house, likely dating from around 1863 – the same time as the adjacent mill block – was built for John Murgatroyd. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with a slate roof and is built into a hillside, consisting of a single tall storey and four bays. The north-facing front, which looks onto the yard, is partially below ground level. This front features four large round-arched openings; the left-hand is a doorway, while the other three have glazed upper sections and coal pits in front. These pits originally had hatches at the rear to allow coal to be shovelled into the engine house, though the right-hand pit has now been blocked over. A parapet rises above the wall, featuring an eaves band and cornice. Internally, the boiler house contained three boilers, which were in the process of being dismantled and removed at the time of the resurvey.
