Description
The Weaving Shed with Roadside Wall and Gatepiers at the north end of the Oats Royd Mill complex is a 19th-century structure, dated "18 JM 87" (John Murgatroyd). It is constructed from coursed squared stone, with a roof made of Welsh slate and glass. The shed is a single tall storey, featuring 20 bays, with ranges that project southwards at the southwest and southeast corners. The west wall serves as a roadside wall and includes gate piers at the southern end.
On the east front, there are four large small-paned windows at low level on the left side, one of which is blocked. Above these windows is a band and additional inserted windows. The building has plain gutter brackets on the table, and the roof is ridged over each bay, with the north-facing pitches glazed and equipped with conical-capped ridge vents. The west front, facing the road, has a tall wall with flat coping that terminates in square-section rusticated piers topped with gabled capstones, although the southern capstone is missing.
On the left return of the weaving shed, there is a wide segmental-arched doorway with rusticated quoining, featuring a 4-panel double door, an overlight, and the date inscribed in the tympanum. Inside, the weaving shed is supported by cast-iron columns and wrought-iron fish-bellied girders. This structure is included for its group value within the mill complex.
