Description

Oats Royd Mill is a mill building, now mostly unoccupied with some commercial premises, located to the east of the road in Sowerby Bridge. It is dated 'JM 1863' for John Murgatroyd. The building is constructed of coursed square stone with a slate roof and has four storeys plus a basement. The gable end faces the road and features three bays. To the right of the center, there is a large round-arched doorway with quoins that is partially blocked and has a window, flanked by rusticated round-arched doorways with 8-panel double doors and fanlights. Each upper floor has a central panelled double loading door, flanked by 6-pane windows with stone lintels and projecting cills; two on the left are blocked, and two on the right are obscured by later gantries crossing the road. A hoist is located in the gable, and there is coping along the top. A stack is positioned at the left corner.

The rear of the building overlooks the valley and features a central square-section stair tower with paired round-arched windows on each floor, including the basement, and single windows in the returns, all having keyed, imposted ashlar surrounds on cill bands. The lower halves of the windows are louvred, while the upper halves have glazing bars. The left return has 16:9 bays, with the 16 left-hand bays breaking forward. Bay 16 previously had first- and second-floor loading doors set in a giant rusticated round arch, with one of the stones dated. Other doorways have stone lintels, and there are 6-pane windows with stone lintels and projecting cills. Gutter brackets are present on the table. Inside, cast-iron columns support large-scantling cross-beams, with timber joists and floorboards.
