Description
This is a mill building located at the south-west corner of Nortonthorpe Mills, dating from the mid-19th century with later alterations. It is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has an L-shaped layout and stands three storeys high, with part of it having a basement.
The roadside front, which faces west, consists of three bays on the left-hand block and seven bays on the right-hand block, with the left block having a gable end. A plinth band runs along the base. The windows are primarily 16-pane sashes with glazing bars, although the ground floor has been replaced with 20th-century windows. The stone lintels and cills are present, along with cill bands on the first and second floors.
Each block has a central doorway with steps leading up to a four-panel double door topped with an overlight, framed by an architrave with pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The right-hand doorway features semi-circular steps, while the left-hand doorway has glazing bars on its overlight, and a window to its left has been converted into a doorway. There is a narrow gap between the two blocks, which is bridged by an entrance with steps leading up to another four-panel double door, complete with a fanlight and a keyed segmental arch. Below the segmental-arched corniced ashlar panel, there is raised lettering. The building has paired gutter brackets and two corniced stacks at the eaves of the right-hand block, with hipped roofs.
On the right return, or south front, there are 16-pane sashes on the upper floors. The north front features a basement storey on the left due to the sloping ground, which includes a segmental-arched cart entry with double board doors. Many of the windows retain their small-pane glazing, which is also present on the southern elevation of this block.
