Description

The Church of St. Augustine is a church built in 1839 by architect Richardson, with an apsed chancel added in 1881 and a south porch constructed in 1935. It is made of hammer-dressed stone featuring diagonal ashlar buttresses and ashlar dressings. The nave has a low-pitched slate roof behind tall parapets, while the chancel and vestries have steeper slate roofs. The church has a 5-bay nave with tall lancet windows that have deep, chamfered reveals and hood moulds, one of which is partially covered by the gabled porch.

The west tower is square and has four stages, with a part-blocked west door beneath a deep hood mould and blocked lancets on the second tier. The bell-chamber features a triple group of lancets, and the octagonal piers have lost their pinnacles. A round stair tower is located on the north side of the tower. The chancel is three-sided and has 2-light windows with plate tracery, while the vestry on the south side is set diagonally.

Inside, the nave has a 10-panel plaster ceiling and a scissor-braced roof in the chancel. There is a raking west gallery supported by two cast iron columns, with a gallery front that features a series of arched sunken panels. An iron chancel screen from 1910 showcases a delicate scrolled foliage design. The tall, moulded chancel arch rests on round responds. The chancel contains choir stalls and an organ, along with an oak pulpit on a clustered pedestal with traceried sides. The stained glass includes late 19th and early 20th-century pieces, including three east windows dedicated to members of the Norton family from 1881, and a Gothic monument to Joseph Norton, who died in 1874.
