Description
Dean House Farmhouse is a house that has been divided into three separate residences. It likely dates from the early to mid-17th century and underwent subdivision and alterations in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone and features a stone slate roof. It has a hall and crosswing plan with a through-passage.
The south front of the farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with a gabled crosswing projecting on the left. The windows are chamfered mullion types. In the crosswing, there is a three-light window flanked by cross-windows, although the mullions have been removed. Above this, a three-light window features round-arched lights with sunk spandrels. In bay two, there is a Tudor-arched stop-chamfered doorway with a board door (No 7), a 19th-century window above, and a 19th-century doorway to the right (No 8). Bay three has a 19th-century four-pane sash window flanked by three-light windows with arched lights and sunk spandrels, with a 19th-century five-light flat-faced mullion window above. Bay four contains two cross-windows, with the mullions removed and altered, and a 19th-century five-light flat-faced mullion window above.
The rear of the building features outer bays that break forward, and the roof has been raised over the two central bays. The two left-hand bays have double-chamfered mullion windows, with those on the first floor showcasing arched lights and sunk spandrels. Bay one has a six-light window (now three-light) under a hoodmould with face stops, along with a six-light window above. Bay two has a five-light window now with flat-faced mullions, and a five-light window above. Bay four indicates the line of a former more steeply-pitched gable roof.
Inside, the rear right room, now used as a dairy, features a stone fireplace with a deep lintel and mantleshelf, along with chamfered spine beams.
