Description
The terrace retaining wall and pool with fountain, located to the east of Broadfold, were likely built in 1877 for John Murgatroyd. The structure features a tall, rock-faced stone retaining wall, primarily constructed of ashlar, which is bowed at the center. The wall includes recessed panels, a modillion cornice, and flanking pilasters that rise into square piers supporting a low balustrade. This balustrade is adorned with vase balusters, and its cornice projects forward beneath square capstones atop the piers. In the bow of the wall, there is a circular pool with a raised corniced rim supported by scallop shell corbels. At the center of the pool stands a fountain with a stepped base and an urn.
