Description
The retaining wall to the upper (western) terrace, along with the steps and wall of the fountain pond, was built in 1911 by Detmar Blow for the 2nd Duke of Westminster. This structure features a grey stone central portion that is slightly curved and recessed, adorned with a balustrade and two ornate urns behind the fountain pool. There are straight flights of stone steps on each side of the pool, each with fountain statuary on the lower pedestal of its balustrade. The retaining wall includes five stone lion head spouts that supply water to the pool, which has a shaped stone kerb. The wing walls are made of red sandstone. The wall continues south of the terrace and is listed separately.
