Description
Crabtree Field is a small, derelict cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. Originally a single storey structure built from rough dressed stone with ashlar quoins, it was raised to two storeys in the early 19th century, with the first floor constructed from finer dressed stone and a stone slate roof. The cottage has a two-room plan with a gable entry to the right of the stack, which is now enclosed by a single storey extension added in the 19th century.
The south front features chamfered mullioned windows, including two-light and three-light windows, the latter of which is missing its mullions. The first floor has two former two-light flat faced mullioned windows, also lacking mullions, with plain stone surrounds. The rear of the cottage has a plinth made of two courses of large dressed stones, a two-light chamfered mullioned window, and two flat faced mullioned windows on the first floor.
Attached to the right-hand return wall is a gabled 19th-century extension that lacks a roof. This extension includes a doorway with monolithic jambs in the gable and a single light window in the south wall, which partly obscures the original doorway that has a large lintel. At the junction with the extension is a two-light chamfered mullioned window, with a single chamfered light above on the first floor, indicating the former attic space where the earlier roof line is still visible. The cottage has a gable stack and is situated on the outskirts of cultivation, bordering Stansfield Moor, likely used for seasonal work during summer pasturing.
