Description
Reaps Cross is a wayside cross that may date back to the medieval period. It consists of a large, rough-dressed boulder with a sunken square hole that holds a roughly dressed monolithic cross shaft. The shaft is rectangular in shape and tapers slightly towards the top, featuring stop-chamfered corners. The larger section of the shaft lies flat at its base and has chamfers for the arms of the cross, which are now broken off. A large metal pin is embedded in the shaft from a previous repair. The cross is situated in a stunning, isolated location on wild moorland, overlooking Gorple Lower Reservoir. It was likely used as a waymarker on the route from Blackshaw Head to Widdop and then to Colne.
