Description

Lower Fold Farmhouse and the attached barn are a mid-18th century laithe-house, with the roof raised and an additional cell added to the house in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The northeast front is mostly from the 19th century. The barn on the left features a semi-circular arched cart entry with a simple Venetian window above it. To the left of the barn's arch is an earlier segmental arched doorway leading to the mistal at a lower level. To the right of the barn arch, there is a 19th-century doorway with tie-stone jambs and two other similar doorways paired together, along with square windows that have plain stone surrounds. The southwest front has quoins that mark the join with the added cell, which includes a former five-light stepped window with a taller central light (missing two mullions), and a window of three square lights, as well as one of two lights with a flat-faced mullioned window above that has two and five lights (three solid). The barn to the right exhibits earlier stonework above the cart entry, which features a monolithic lintel and a broad chamfered surround. Inside, the barn consists of three bays with a softwood queen-post roof and three stacks at the ridge.
