Description

Everhill Shaw Farmhouse and the attached barn are located off Edge Lane in Heptonstall. The farmhouse dates from the early 17th century, with an added cell from the early to mid-18th century, and a barn added in the early 19th century. The house is constructed of large dressed stone, while the addition is made of rough dressed stone, and the barn features finely dressed stone. All structures are covered with stone slates.

The farmhouse has a three-room through-passage plan and includes an added gabled porch, likely from the early 18th century. The windows throughout are double chamfered mullioned windows with cavetto moulded mullions. Notable features include a six-light window at the service end with a three-light window above it, and a five-light parlour window with a three-light window above. The porch has chamfered jambs, and the inner door features a segmental arched lintel and moulded jambs. The rear of the house has a three-light single chamfered mullioned window and similar window arrangements as the front.

The barn has a segmental arched cart entry and a simple Venetian window with an impost and false keystone above it, along with mistal doorways and square windows on either side. Inside the farmhouse, the division wall between the through-passage and the service end is made of large single stones that splay out to support a double thickness wall at the first floor. The parlour features a Tudor arched fireplace with a tressure on the lintel and a chamfered surround. The interior also includes reeded floor joints and two king-post trusses, one over the division of the housebody and parlour with ten "V" struts, and the other over the housebody with finely chamfered queen struts and stop chamfered purlins. At one time, the farmhouse served as the township workhouse.
