Description
The Black Horse Hotel, located at 196, 198, and 200 Towngate, is a row of three cottages that now serve as hotel accommodation. Number 200 shows signs of an earlier timber-framed rear wall dating back to the mid-16th century. It has been rebuilt in hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof from the mid-18th century.
Numbers 196 and 198 both have doorways with tie stones and three three-light flat-faced mullioned windows between them, with similar windows above, where the mullions are slightly recessed. Number 200 has a doorway with monolithic jambs flanked by three-light mullioned windows that were altered in the 19th century by the removal of one mullion, which is now a casement, with the same arrangement above. The building has quoins at each end, and the right-hand end features a coped gable with kneelers. There are four stacks along the ridge. The rear includes a single-storey aisle with a cat-slide roof and a gable for number 196.
Inside, numbers 196 and 198 both have queen post roofs. Number 200 contains scarf joints in the spine beams of the main room, evidence of a former bressumer and firehood (now removed), and a king post roof with a post and timbered arcade from the earlier timber-framed structure.
