Description

A row of three cottages, now with numbers 2 and 3 combined into one property, likely dating from the 18th century, with later 20th-century renovations and additions. The construction is whitewashed rendered cob and stone, featuring a thatched roof. The roof is gabled at the left end, with a projecting stack there, and two axial stacks. The original layout is somewhat unclear but may have initially been three single-cell cottages, each with a hall/kitchen and probably a winder stair. However, numbers 2 and 3 are now separated only by a stud partition wall, suggesting they may have once been a single cottage. 20th-century additions have been made to the left end and rear of the range. The front of the cottages has an asymmetrical arrangement of four windows. A plank and cover strip door leads to number 1 (the right-hand cottage), next to a similar door to number 2; both have timber lintels. The doorway to number 3 is blocked. There are three ground-floor windows, each a 1- or 2-light casement with small panes and timber lintels. Above them, four identical first-floor windows each contain four panes per light. Inside number 1, there is a straight staircase against the front wall, a large cross beam, and exposed joists. The fireplace has breccia ashlar jambs and a plain timber lintel. Number 2 has a winder staircase against the front wall, while the fireplace in number 3 is brick with an iron lintel, which is probably a 19th-century replacement. The roof over numbers 2 and 3 has been largely replaced, but some original apex trusses of large scantling remain, pegged together.
