Description

Kirklees Mill is a late 18th-century corn mill built from hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It stands two and a half storeys tall and features a symmetrical northeast front with five bays. The central bay includes a doorway with tie-stones and a wooden canopy above, along with a central pedimented Venetian window. On either side of the central bay are two bays of flat-faced mullioned windows with two lights on the first two floors. The building has quoins at the corners. The return walls display similar features, including a Venetian window in the attic of the right-hand gable, which also has a stack. At the rear, there is an outshut housing a cast-iron undershot waterwheel. An archway leading to the mill race has an inscribed keystone reading 'JULY 27TH 1864', and the waterwheel housing may date from the same period. Inside, much of the grinding gear is still intact, and the windows feature brick springer arches.
