Description

The mill building at Priory Mill is an early 19th-century water-powered corn mill. It features partly roughcast rubble with stone slate eaves courses and pantile roofs. The structure is two storeys high with a loft and has two windows on the first floor. To the north, there is an attached single-storey wheel-house over the mill race. Much of the east and south sides are obscured by 20th-century single-storey additions that are not of special interest. The south side includes a door flanked by casement windows (within a later addition) and first-floor windows with flat brick arches. There is a brick end stack on the left.

At the rear, the wheel-house has a central doorway and a pitched roof with stone-slate verges. On the right return, there is an ashlar arch beneath the wheel-house featuring a projecting keystone.

Inside, the wheel-house retains a breast-shot, eight-spoke cast-iron wheel, which was in poor condition at the time of the last survey. The main building has a sturdy wooden platform against the left gable, with gearing beneath and vertical shafts rising to positions for two sets of stones. There is a sack hoist with double trap doors to each floor, and the millstones are now set in the paving outside.
