Description
Home Farm Building Number 9, known as the Malthouse, dates from the late 17th century and is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands three storeys high with an attic. It features a weathered plinth, string courses on each floor, and hoodmoulds with straight returns above the third-floor windows and attic. The gables are adorned with quoins, coped gables with kneelers, and a base for a finial at the roof apex. The gables also include cart entries with a four-centred arched lintel and composite jambs. The east gable showcases receding double chamfered mullioned windows above a doorway, with configurations of four, three, and two lights. The right-hand return wall has a doorway with a three-centred arched lintel and composite jambs, along with double chamfered mullioned windows of three lights on the ground floor and two lights on the first and second floors, plus an external stair leading to a segmental arched doorway on the first floor.
Inside, the building features a king post roof with heavy, slightly cambered tie beams. There is a basket arched doorway leading to a cross-wing that includes a fireplace with a Tudor arched lintel, spandrels, and a chamfered surround. The main long range has heavy spine beams that are cut through at the first floor, revealing haunched tenon joints connecting to equally heavy joists. The walls are plastered, and the original lime-ash floor, laid on rushes or lathes, is preserved on the upper floors. Notably, an orange Plimsoll line runs around the building under the windows to indicate maximum floor loadings. This building represents a remarkably rare and complete survival of its type.
