Description

This milestone, dating from the early 18th century, is located 100 meters southwest of the Shepherd's Rest Public House along a packhorse track. It is a single stone monolith with stop-chamfered corners. The inscription, which is weathered and difficult to read, features 18th-century script on three faces. The east face reads "T O", the north face also reads "T O", and the west face reads "T O" followed by "H a 1 B u oach" and "f a x e lale" along with distances of "9 Ms", "7 Ms", and "6 MS", likely indicating Halifax, Burnley, and Rochdale. The milestone is set against the south wall of a double-walled track that leads to a packhorse route to Cheshire, known as the Salter Rake Gate, near its intersection with Withins New Road.
