Description
Lower Longfield Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-17th century, constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and features a three-room front with a through-passage plan and a two-storey porch. The south front includes a four-light double chamfered mullioned window, with a similar window above it, although both lack two mullions. There is also a nine-light double chamfered mullioned window with two king mullions, which is missing six mullions, and has a hoodmould with a straight return. Above, there are a chamfered mullioned window of four lights (missing two mullions) and one of two lights (lacking a mullion).
The porch has a plinth and an open doorway with a chamfered surround. The first floor jetties out with a simple chamfer and features a two-light window. The gable is coped with kneelers, though it is obscured by ivy. Inside the porch, there is a similar doorway with a stop-chamfered surround. The house has a six-light window and a four-light window above it, both of which have been altered to two-wide lights. All windows have been modified with modern glazing.
The original west gable was rebuilt in the early 18th century and includes kneelers and a stack, along with two other stacks. Attached to the rear is a kitchen range that forms a T-shaped plan, with one cell from the 17th century and an added early 18th-century cell in watershot masonry, also with a stone slate roof. This range retains chamfered mullioned windows of two lights and six lights (lacking some mullions but retaining the king mullion), as well as quoins, a coped gable with kneelers, and a stack. There is one additional stack on this range. Overall, this once fine house has been severely affected by the alteration of its windows.
