Description
The former Unitarian Chapel and Sunday School in Todmorden was built between 1822 and 1824 as a Methodist-Unitarian chapel and was later replaced by Gibson's Unitarian Church on Honey Holey Road in 1869. An additional cross-wing was added in 1899. The building now serves as a plastics factory. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a slate roof. The structure is single-storey facing the road and two-storey on the valley side, with the original Sunday School located on the lower-ground floor. The cross-wing is gabled and three-storey.
The front features five bays with squared surround windows, and there are two similar windows at the southwest end. The original Sunday School's lower-ground floor windows still have their glazing bars. The roof has a low pitch with half hips and console brackets that are spaced along the gutter-eaves cornice. The building has chamfered rusticated quoins, and the cross-wing displays a shaped gable with kneelers. The doorway for the Sunday School entrance features a triple keystone above which is an inscribed tablet set within a recess that reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF SAMUEL, JOHN, AND JOSHUA FIELDEN, Constant Benefactors of THE UNITARIAN CHURCH AND SCHOOL This stone was laid by S. ALFRED STEINTHAL June 17th 1899."
The first floor has three large windows, and both the five-bay return and the five-bay main range have windows with plain stone surrounds. The gable on the south side has a loading bay that was inserted around 1980.
