Description
The Tabernacle Presbyterian Chapel is a Calvinistic Methodist Chapel constructed in 1837 and rebuilt in 1861, with significant remodelling in 1927. The building features unpainted roughcast walls and a hipped slate roof with bracketed flat eaves. It is a large, two-storey structure with a three-window rear west elevation facing Gomer Crescent, showcasing well-spaced, large arched upper windows and rectangular ground floor windows with unpainted architraves and 1927 leaded glazing. The ground floor on the right includes a single-storey porch with a side-wall door.
The front elevation is obscured by a large schoolroom added in 1892, which extends towards the street. The main porch to the left, possibly added in 1927, features two long, narrow arched windows above it and a slate roundel commemorating the building's history. The porch is substantial, with a timber open pediment over an arched doorway, flanked by one window on each side and a hipped roof. The double doors are topped with a large leaded fanlight dated 1927.
The vestry range includes six arched windows on the south side and a gable with a yellow brick stack positioned between the fourth and fifth windows. The 1927 remodelling changed the chapel's orientation, moving the entry from the side where the pulpit is located. Inside, the gallery extends around three sides without supporting columns, featuring chamfered angles and a panelled timber front divided by curved pedimented panels with framing piers and lozenge inserts. The boarded timber ceiling is arranged in panels with a coved border.
The interior includes a semi-circular great seat with a panelled back, a pulpit with a panelled front and steps on each side, and a large organ from 1896 made by Vowles, located behind the organ. To the right of the organ is a stained glass window from 1927 dedicated to Rev W Jenkins Jones (1852-1925), a missionary to Brittany, created by J Hall and Sons. The schoolroom features arch-braced trusses supporting its eight-bay roof.
