Description

Croft Farmhouse and the attached barn are located on Lumbutts Road in Todmorden. The farmhouse likely dates from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the late 20th century, while the barn is from the mid-17th century. The building is constructed of large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof, with the barn having a slate roof as well. It is 1½ storeys tall and has a three-room, through-passage layout.

Originally, the farmhouse may have been a single storey with an open hall. The service end has been altered, featuring a window with a slight chamfer and marks of former mullions, which is now a door. There is a doorway with 19th-century characteristics, including monolithic jambs. A three-light chamfered fire-window lacks mullions, and there is a double chamfered housebody window with a deep splay and a hoodmould with straight returns, originally designed with five round-headed lights but now altered to a large window. Above this is a chamfered window that was formerly three lights. The parlour window has also been altered to form a large light. The right-hand return wall has a former three-light window on the ground floor and a four-light chamfered window in the attic. The gable is coped with kneelers, and there is an off-centre stack along with two other stacks on the ridge.

The attached barn, located at the left end of the farmhouse, is a single-aisled construction with four bays and features coped gables with kneelers. There is a single cart entry at the rear. A 19th-century outshut at the back of the house includes an altered through-passage doorway with a long lintel and monolithic jambs, along with small chamfered lights on either side, one of which is blocked. There is also a two-light chamfered window under the eaves. Inside, the roof purlins display a fine stop chamfer, and although the single truss is not visible, it has a very deep tie-beam. The farmhouse was once a fine early stone house but has suffered from alterations to its windows in recent years.
