Description

Oldroyd Farmhouse is an early 17th-century house, altered in the 19th century, originally divided into two occupations. The interior reveals two bays of post and truss construction with mortices indicating a close-studded wall to the soffit of the tie beam, likely dating to the early 16th century. The farmhouse is built of large dressed stone, with a stone slate roof. It has a 3-cell front. The first cell retains a doorway with a Tudor arched lintel and a stop-chamfered surround. The windows have been altered to have a flat-faced mullioned design; one is a 4-light window with a 6-light window above. To the left is a single-storey bay with a doorway and a window, both with plain stone surrounds. The second and third cells project forward and have coped gables under a 2-span roof. Double-chamfered mullioned windows with a hollow-chamfered surround and mullions are found on the ground floor; the first floor windows are chamfered with hoodmoulds that have straight returns over each window. A 7-light window is present with a 5-light window above it. A 4-light window is paired with a 2-light window above it. A projecting rainwater chute sits between the gables. The right-hand return wall is gabled and has windows with chamfered surrounds, formerly 2 lights and 3 lights to the first floor. On the rear elevation, a 3-light chamfered mullioned window with a cavetto-moulded mullion is visible on the ground floor, featuring a heavy one-piece lintel. There is a break in the stonework, with the rear portion stepped back and likely rebuilt in the early 19th century over original footings. There are two gable stacks and a third at the junction of the first and second cell.
