Description

Nos. 3 and 5 Castle Grove is a house that has been converted into a pair of cottages, dating back to 1816, which is the date of the first land transaction. The building features watershot masonry and a stone slate roof, and it stands three storeys tall. The south front has a coped gable with kneelers at the left end. There is a clear break between this building and a later attached row on the right end, which is not included in this listing.

The structure consists of two cells, each with a doorway that has tie-stones and a double chamfered mullioned window with two wide lights. Above these doorways, there are flat-faced mullioned windows with two lights on the first and second floors. The building has two stacks at the ridge. At the rear of the first cell, there is a blocked semi-circular arched entry with a prominent keystone, which has an inserted door. To the left of this entry is another double chamfered mullioned window with two wide lights, and similar windows above it on the first and second floors of both cells. This building showcases a remarkable survival of 17th-century window detail or possibly a Vernacular Revival style.
