Description

This milestone, dating from the 18th century, is located opposite number 21 on Lumbutts Lane in Todmorden. It is a single upright stone with inscriptions on three faces, although the northern face is significantly weathered. The inscriptions indicate distances to various locations: "7 Miles" to Rochdale, "8 Mile(s)" to Halifax, and "1 Mile" to Stalldale. This milestone is now part of the Calderdale Way but originally marked a packhorse route from Cheshire to Halifax, which was used for transporting salt. A section of this route is known as Salter Rake Gate.
