Description
The water tower to Lumbutts Old Mill is an early 19th-century structure built from hammer-dressed stone. Originally part of a cotton mill that is no longer standing, the tower stands 98 feet tall and has a rectangular plan with a lateral chimney that houses a spiral staircase. It is designed in three stages, each stepping back from the one below, and features semi-circular arched doorways at each level. The top stage has a square window, which is now blocked, and is topped with a heavy balustrade that is square in section. To the north of the tower is the base of the housing for a vertical beam engine. The tower originally contained three waterwheels that were fed from the top, but these were later replaced by a pelton-wheel, which has since been removed. This structure serves as a striking industrial monument.
