Description
This is a mid 19th-century turnpike mile stone located on the south side of Saddleworth Road, opposite High Trees Lane. It is made of dressed stone and cast iron, standing freestanding with an arch-headed design. The stone features a triangular front and a flat area above the arch. The inscriptions read from the top left: "ELLAND AND SADDLEWORTH ROAD, GREETLAND OUTER DISTRICT: JUNCTION 10 MILES ROCHDALE 16 MILES" on the right side, and "ELLAND 2 1/2 MILES" below. The letters are in raised capitals and the mile stone was erected for the Barkisland and Elland Branch of the Huddersfield and New Hey Trust.
