Description
Bowers is a house dated 1614, with an additional parallel range added to the south in the mid-17th century and 19th-century alterations. It features large dressed stone and a stone slate roof, and is two storeys high. The south front has a plinth, a string course, and double chamfered mullioned windows with seven lights, along with a six-light window above on the first floor. There is a porch with a basket arched doorway that has carved shields set in the spandrels and a deeply moulded surround. Above this, the string course forms a triangular pediment with a coped gable and a lantern finial. The front also includes a three-light window with a four-light window above, and a sashed window with a three-light window above it.
On the left return wall, there is a coped gable with kneelers and an extruded stack. The first floor features a two-light window with a hoodmould and label stops. Set back from this is the remains of the earlier housebody, which has a two-light fire-window and a former 14-light mullioned and transomed window that has been altered to form three large lights, both of which have hoodmoulds with carved label stops. The service end has been rebuilt and includes a 19th-century cottage, all of which have sashed windows.
The right return wall has two gables, with a string course stepping over four sashed windows that possibly had 15-paned glazing originally. There is a single sash window in each gable, which is coped with kneelers and finials, one of which is inscribed with "HM". Set back is an earlier house featuring a Tudor arched doorway with a lintel carved with spandrels and the date "1614", along with a chamfered surround. Above this doorway is a small arched light with sunken spandrels. To the right, there is a three-light chamfered mullioned window with a hoodmould, and a four-light double chamfered mullioned window on the first floor. The house has three stacks along the ridge.
