Description

This barn, likely dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, stands ten metres to the west of Stubbing Farmhouse. It is constructed of thin rubble brought to course with dressed quoins, and has a stone slate roof. The barn is a single-aisled structure of four bays. It features a through-purlin truss with triple angle struts resting on braced posts to the aisle, supporting a common rafter roof. The large, impressive gable incorporates numerous square-headed, chamfered ventilators. On the left-hand return wall is a doorway with a depressed arched lintel, leading to an aisle mistal. A square-headed entry to the barn is located at the arcade-plate point, with an internal porch supported by the aisle roof. The lintel over this entry is formed by two re-used timbers exhibiting half-lap joints, which likely originated from an earlier cruck building.
